openputt

Putting lessons · drills · games

The complete putting training system.

Learn to read break, judge green speed and handle grain. Practise the 40-foot lag your living room can't fit, and learn the greens of next week's course before you tee off. You putt on your own carpet with your own putter; your TV rolls every putt out on a real green.

How it works

  1. 1

    Set up your phone

On a stand, looking down at the floor just past your ball. No mat, no sensors, nothing to stick on your putter.

  2. 2

    Putt

The camera reads how fast the ball leaves your putter and which way it starts.

  3. 3

    Watch it roll

Your TV plays the rest: the slope, the speed, the grain and the hole. Did you hit it on line? Was it the pace? You'll see.

Cast to your TV, or open openputt.app/tv in its browser. No TV handy? Putt with just your phone.

Lessons that make it click

Short, hands-on lessons on the things most golfers guess at. Each one shows you, then has you putt it.

  • Reading the break. Why a putt curves, where it peaks, and how far to aim above the hole.
  • Uphill and downhill. How long a slope makes a putt play, and how to putt to a "ghost hole" instead.
  • Green speed. What the Stimp number really means, why the same stroke rolls so differently on slow and fast greens, and why fast greens break more.
  • Grain. How putting down grain, into it and across it changes the roll.

Every grass. Every speed.

Bentgrass and Poa roll true. Bermuda, Paspalum, Zoysia and Kikuyu have grain: down grain the ball runs out, into it the putt dies early, and across it the ball drifts with the grass. Set how strong the grain is, which way it grows and the time of day (it's stronger in the afternoon), then set the green from slow to tournament-fast. Practise on the greens you'll actually play, not the one in your hallway.

Drills that build real skills

Over 25 drills for reading slopes, pace and lag putting, the grain, making the short ones, and putting from off the green. Here are some of them.

Games for the whole family

Pass the putter round with up to six players, or take on the TV by yourself. Bowling, darts and curling with a putter are as fun as they sound, and they train your pace without you noticing.

Know the greens before you get there

Playing somewhere new next week? Pick the course, and putt on the real slopes of its greens, made from elevation data.

  • Put the flag where the pin sheet says, and set the speed the course runs at.
  • Practise the putts you'll face: above the hole, below it, from the front, the long lag.
  • Play a 9- or 18-hole putting round, green by green.
  • Save your plan and run it again the night before.
  • Hundreds of golf courses ready to putt. Missing yours? Add it or request it in the app (US, limited UK and EU).

See what's really costing you putts

  • Line or pace? Every miss is split into the two, so you know what to work on.
  • Shots won and lost. Your putting against tour players, scratch golfers and handicaps from 5 to 30, by putt length, plus a putting handicap from every drill.
  • Where you leave it. Every lag putt's finish on a map round the hole, so you can see whether you come up short.
  • Green by green. After course prep, see which greens and pin spots still give you trouble.

Take it to the course

A one-page cheat sheet: how much to change your pace for slope, speed and grain. Printed tables, so it's fine to use in a round.

Training aids, on screen

Turn on an aim line, the putt's path, mow stripes and a close-up of the hole. Turn them off as you get better. Walk round the green to read it from every side.

Somewhere beautiful

Putt above the clouds, by the ocean, in a canyon, a fjord or an autumn park. A new view every session.

Better putting starts in your living room.
